This is a review written of a Cartier Divan replica watch that I examined back in 2005. Much has changed in the industry in the ensuing two years but this watch remains in my opinion one of the most accurate replicas there was. It's rather rare in it's high-end example, though there are still several of the cheaper examples floating around the Internet.
The Genuine
The
Cartier Divan is a relatively new model for the high-end manufacturer.
Its an extension of their tank concept taken to a new extreme; its wide
and bold with a unique strap that accentuates the lines of the watch.
Cartier
makes this watch in three major versions: Automatic movement (indicated
by Automatic on the dial), quartz and ladies quartz. Both versions use
the same case and strap. The only way to quickly tell the difference
between the two models is to look for the Automatic script on the dial.
As
with many Cartier watches it uses blued-steel hands. The case can be
made of stainless steel or yellow gold. There are also variations that
have diamond-studded cases.
 The Counterfeits
Cartier
has long been a favorite brand for the replica manufacturers to
duplicate. Cartiers extensive use of quartz makes inexpensive copies
easy to produce. Cartiers case design is also simple to duplicate.
There are replicas of almost all of Cartiers mens line of watches.
Like
any other replica the quality of the Divan copies vary widely from
watch to watch. Different manufacturers seem to have different
tolerances for quality and authenticity. Unfortunately the higher
quality Divans are actually quite close to the original and can be a
source of consternation for the average watch collector.
Common Flaws
There
are several areas that can be examined to help determine if a Cartier
model is real or counterfeit. These can be compared with a quick
inspection of the watch without needing to open the case.
Crown jewel
The jewel should be faceted and have a deep blue color. The jewel on
the replicas tends to be light blue and have a glassy appearance.
Case screws
On each side of the case are two small screws. On the genuine piece
these screws are very small; approximately the size of the screws on
the case back. On some replicas these screws are much larger and
ill-fit.
