Review of Replica Two-Toned Rolex Submariner

HERE is another interesting thread of a new model TT Sub. These new versions put all the old TT Sub replicas to shame.

Here's JNKAY's excellent comparison shot (genuine on the left). It clearly demonstrates how visually accurate the new replicas are. They still need to fix the oversized "Jumbo" winding crown from the reps which always sticks out like a sore thumb. Also, the 18K gold looks different (notice the more "creamy" and less yellow gold tone in the genuine). While the rep is excellent I believe the picture probably flatters the rep. Based on my own experiences the overall quality of the genuine is still clearly superior, especially when you're able to examine the gold finishing and details closely. But honestly: what do you except when the price difference is $5.800?

So how many microns of "gold plating" these TT watches have? If you consider that genuine TAGs use 10 microns of gold in their plated watches... do you think Chinese-made fake watches could be better in that department? You'd better think again.

Until someone knowledgeable can inspect a plated two-tone replica throughly we really don't know. Some members have reported this type of plating/wrapping very durable, some others have reported from tarnished bracelets after just a few weeks of use. Durability of the gold is probably very individual thing. Sweat and dirt will probably tarnish the links very quickly, but if you're not wearing your plated rep as a beater (and only as a special occasion watch) it might last for years.

So... what's the conclusion then? Is the rep worth the money?

Yes and no. I think the TT Rolex replicas are very nice looking watches (in their own merits) and when the watch is on your wrist it might even fool someone to think that you're wearing an expensive watch. But if you hand over the rep for closer examination to a knowledgeable watch guy/jeweler he will call you out immediately. I suggest you invest more money and buy your TT watch with solid 14K gold bracelet...but not before the last link problem has been fixed (from the solid gold models as well).

Personally, I couldn't live with the flaws of my TT Sub (or invest lots of money to expensive mods) and I eventually traded it. Sometimes I wish I didn't, it was a beautiful watch.
