Replicas of the Patek Philippe Nautilus fall into two broad catergories: Asian movement replicas that are cheap and tinny and ETA movement watches that are substantial but have several flaws. The example shown below is one of the latter.
Fake Nautilus watches based on Asian movements are easy to spot because of the typical poor quality of the materials. The band is particularly suspect, being thin and having links held together by pins in some cases. You normally can spot these examples from the quality issues.
"Swiss" or ETA Fake Nautilus watches are made from a higher quality of stainless steel, and are therefore harder to spot. Most of these have some major flaws, as this example has the incorrect case back. Also note the incorrect date font. This watch is covered in more detail in the Replica Watch Report.

Here is another example of how replica Breitling watches have improved in just 12 months. This fake Breitling Seawolf has a very accurate case, and for once a replica has an accurate date wheel. The watch even has the Breitling "B" engraved at the 10-o'clock position on the bezel, just as the genuine watch has.
Replica Breitlings, no matter how accurate they may be, still suffer from several major flaws. The biggest flaw is the lack of a convincing anti-reflective coating on the crystal. Look also for inaccurate model numbers on the case back.

The replica Panerai that's photographed here uses an ETA 7753 movement, which accurately models the function of the genuine 187. The hour markers are off-colored on this replica, and the date wheel font is inaccurate. Case material quality is slightly poorer than the original, and the crystal does not have the proper anti-refliective coating. |
