Each watch has embedded in its case back a small fragment of wood from the original ship used by Cousteau, the Calypso. Several IWCs in the past have been duplicated by the replica manufacturers in the past. Most have had obvious flaws such as quartz movements or the lack of an anti-reflective coating on the crystal. Just recently several versions of the Ingenuer line of IWCs have been replicated with titanium cases and in some instances chronograph movements. All have some rather obvious flaws that makes them easy to identify.

Most of the cues of the genuine exist in the replica watch. The case back is the easiest way to spot replicas of this watch as it displays an incorrect movement. The pictures below are of a replica IWC Aquatimer. The quality is below that of a genuine IWC in just about every category. Most visible is the poor-quality bezel. The black in the bezel has the appearance of being colored in with a magic marker. Also the hour markers are of an incorrect size. This is another example of a poor quality replica that will probably improve in quality over the next few months.
